Delhi Schools Mandated to Prohibit Single-Use Plastic: DDE Issues Stringent Directive

New Delhi: The Delhi Directorate of Education (DDE) has issued a circular prohibiting single-use plastics (SUPs) in all government and government-aided schools, marking a significant advancement in environmental sustainability. The instruction is based on a recommendation by the Department of Environment, emphasizing the significant ecological consequences of SUPs.

What is the rationale behind the prohibition?
The circular references the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, which ban 19 specified single-use plastic items. Common plastic products such as carry bags, packaging films, straws, and cups impede drainage and sewer systems, leading to waterlogging due to their non-biodegradable characteristics.

Transition to Sustainable Practices in Educational Institutions
School officials have been implored to eradicate the utilization of single-use plastics in regular operations and embrace sustainable alternatives. India is doing a lot to fight climate change and make the future more safe, and this project fits in with that.

Now, educational institutions are expected to lead efforts to raise knowledge and carry out the ban effectively. On the official DDE website, you can find the whole letter and advice.
